AMD Unveils 45nm Six-Core Istanbul Server Processor

Ahead of schedule, AMD has released its first 45-nanometer six-core server processor code-named Istanbul. The new server processor is available now with clock speeds up to 2.6GHz and all of the new chips pull 75 watts of power.

All five of the new Istanbul CPU's have 6MB of L3 cache, 512KB of L2 cache (per core), and 64KB of L1 data cache and 64KB of instruction cache per processor core.

"Based on close collaboration with our customers, we believe there is a clear value shift changing the economics of the server market," said Patrick Patla, vice president and general manager, Server and Workstation Business, AMD. "The new Six-Core AMD Opteron processor meets the increasing need for a combination of low total cost of ownership, superior performance-per-watt and scalability. Simply put, Six-Core AMD Opteron processors deliver top-line performance that's bottom-line efficient."

The new chips range in price from $455 to $2,649 USD. All of the chips are available now.
