Amazon Kindle 3 Color To Costly To Sell Now?

I wouldn't be holding out for the Amazon Kindle 3 or as we call the Kindle Color, the CEO of Amazon said Thursday that the color version of its E-Book reader is "multiple" years away.

He went on and told shareholders at the annual shareholders meeting in Seattle that he did not want to disclose how many Kindles had been sold. He also went on to say that the Color Kindle was not imminent and said he didn't "know how many years but it's years".

One of the big reasons why could be the possibly that color e-readers are much slower at rendering using today's technology. In a year or two, this of course could all change. Slow rendering aside, you also have to look at the price points of a color e-book reader.

Fujitsu offers a FLEPia color reader but it costs a whopping $1,000 bucks. I know about you but I don't want to pay a $1k for an e-reader, I think Amazon would need to at least get the color version of the Kindle down to under $500 to be a good entry point into the market.

Perhaps the industry will dump the whole E-Ink technology altogether and go with OLED with ultra low battery consumption in an effort to offer a more vivid, more functional e-reader, and at a lower price point than a color e-ink device.

Amazon's latest Kindle DX was unveiled earlier this month at a $489 that provides 3.3GB of storage (3,500 books). You can buy it now through Amazon.com.
