Dell is preparing its new line of Latitude notebooks to take on netbooks in the education industry. The kid-friendly 2100 models are geared towards kindergarten through eight grade and features four different 'school age' colors; School Bus Orange, Blue Ribbon, Red Apple, and Chalkboard Black.
Spec wise, the notebook comes with a 10.1-inch screen, 1.6GHz Atom CPU, up to 2GB of RAM, and an optional solid state hard drive. The whole notebook weighs in at just under three pounds, making it very portable for transporting between home and school. One of the best features of the 2100 is that it's rubberized to help protect it from the tossing around in your backpack or perhaps drop from your hands (hopefully that won't be the case).
"The Latitude 2100 has unique features for schools like bright primary colors and a more rugged, rubberized design that is easier for children to carry and use safely. It also offers wireless connectivity that can be monitored by the teacher with a Network Activity Light on the netbook lid. An optional touchscreen is a first for an education netbook and makes the Latitude 2100 a perfect choice for enhanced student interaction, assessment, and for special education teaching. The Latitude 2100 also offers administrators a range of services making it easier to deploy and manage." the Dell press release stated.
Dell will provide users the choice of Windows XP, Windows Vista Home Basic, or Ubuntu Linux (Yeah!). You can also add-on features such as WiFi, Bluetooth, and even a Webcam.
Availability and Pricing
The Dell Latitude 2100 Welch flavored laptops will start at $369 with Ubuntu Linux as the OS. The laptops will be available sometime towards the end of May 2009 - just in time for summer fun and preparations for School in fall.
