Call The Googleplex, Google News Is Down

It would appear as though Google News has been down for over 40 minutes for users, presenting them with a 502 server message and stating to try again in 30 seconds. The outage started around 7:40AM CST and continues to be down at 8:26AM.

Some users are reporting from over seas that Google News is working fine for them. Here in the central US, it's still down. At least for us.

After some investigation, it appears that some datacenters may have went offline and the other data centers are absorbing the load and re-routing which may take some time.

Stay tuned, we'll provide updates of the outage and will let you know once things appear to be back online.

Update (8:32AM) It would appear as though things are getting back to normal. We were able to access Google News for a minute but then we refreshed and saw the 503 error again. We also still have many users that we have been in contact with that say its still down completely for them.

Outages are inevitable, especially for company's as large as Google. Even though they have all of the redundancy known to man, the sheer amount of traffic they receive has to place a bit of a load on the data centers when one or two of them has an issue.

Update 2 (8:41AM) And We're Back! We've consistently been able to surf Google News and with 'decent' loading speeds. I believe Google News is back in business! Please let us know if you are still experiencing issues with Google News where you live.

Update 3 (11:00AM) Apparently not so fast.. literally. It would appear as though Google News was back up and running but a bit slow - which has now turned in to VERY slow - crawling like when I was on a 9K baud modem. There are still many issues at the Googleplex - when will they clear up?

We checked the Google Status page and found this for Gmail users:

"We're aware of a problem with Google Mail affecting a small subset ofnusers. The affected users are unable to access Google Mail. We willnprovide an update by May 14, 2009 12:00:00 PM UTC-5 detailing when wenexpect to resolve the problem. Please note that this resolution time isnan estimate and may change.
*This may also be affecting other services"

Perhaps everything will be cleared up across all of the Google application after this issue is resolved?

For the heck of it, I signed out of my Google Account and everything began working fine on Google News, Homepage, ect.. so apparently its an issue linked to users logged into Google Accounts or Gmail Accounts and accessing Google's services.

The fix? For now, just log out of your account and everything should load fine.
