Google Squared extracts data from sites and displays the results as 'squares' in an online spreadsheet format to make it easier to find the data you want. For example, if you were to search for "Small Dogs" the columns in the spreadsheet would include; names, size, weight, colors, etc with the results in the rows beneath.
This sounds a lot like WolframeAlpha that we spoke of earlier this week where it generates 'specific' and detailed search data based. These type of search result formats that is soon to be offered by both Google and WolframAlpha are geared towards research of products, scientific information, and precise or targeted searches.
Another Google Squared feature is that you can add your own columns to the spreadsheet for the search to compute the data for. You can also continually add search data to generate more 'squares' or results to the same page.
One of the hardest problems in computer science is data abstraction - looking at the unstructured web and abstracting values and facts and information in a meaningful way in order to present it to users, building out some of these research spreadsheets in an automated way. But thats no longer a hypothetical. Google Vice President Marisa Mayer stated in an interview.
While the new Google Squared Search isn't perfect, it does provide a lot of useful features that will definitely be welcomed to the search giant by its users.
