Microsoft Confirms Windows 7 Holiday Launch

Microsoft confirmed in an interview on Monday that Windows 7, it's next desktop operating system, will be in stores by the holiday shopping season this year.

"We are tracking well to a Windows 7 holiday," Microsoft Senior Vice President Bill Veghte said in the interview. This coincides with rumors from computer makers that Windows would ship in late October.

Microsoft released Windows 7 RC to the public earlier this month and is on schedule for the Windows 7 RTM in July or August time frame.

In February Microsoft announced the six different flavors of Windows 7 which include; windows 7 Starter available only for OEM worldwide, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate. They also went on to state that there will only be two "boxed" or retail versions available for consumers to avoid confusion that Windows Vista brought to the market. If you want Ultimate you will have to do an upgrade once you get up and running on one of the two retail versions.

I've been running Windows 7 RC for a while now and I am thoroughly impressed with it. Is it much different from Vista? No, but it seems more stable and lighter weight.

Update: Microsoft confirms October 22nd Launch Date.
