Something we all saw coming is about to happen, Yahoo has finally decided to close GeoCities. Yahoo purchased GeoCities, a free publishing and hosting service, back in May of 1999 at the peak of the dot-com boom. The service has been doing poorly pretty much ever since the dot-com era. Visitors are now being presented with a message stating that no new GeoCities accounts will be available to users, instead they must opt for paid web hosting starting at $5.95 a month.
Existing GeoCities accounts will remain functional at least until the end of the year. Users are being urged to upgrade to paid hosting if they wish to save their data or either backup the data they wish to keep. This includes GeoCities Plus accounts.
Looking for free hosting still? Why not try Blogger, LiveJournal or WordPress as alternative sites for free hosting.
A lot of folks hate to see GeoCities go for the simple fact that many started their first web site at GeoCities. What about Angelfire, does that ring a bell to anyone? I still have an account there as well. They also still offer free hosting if you're interested. I also used Freeservers.com back in the day and they too seem to be still in operation.
Farewell GeoCities! I really
