Sony announced today that the PlayStation 2 will now be available for under $100, actually $99 to be exact beginning April 1st, 2009. Sony hopes the new price will allow the company to gain more market share from gamers who are on a stricter budget which means more families will become a part of the PlayStation 2 community.
A typical lifecycle of a gaming console is around five years, but Sony's consoles seem to stick around a bit longer due to their platforms for large and diverse consumer base. With the original PlayStation and now PlayStation 2, Sony has proven that consumers can rely on Sony's platforms for their gaming and entertainment needs for at least a decade.
A lot of gamers were expecting more news today, specifically bigger news relating to the PSP or PlayStation 3. I don't think this was the "Big News" that everyone is or was expecting to hear. It's nice to see a price cut, but the PlayStation 2 has been around a very long time - years are being added to the PSP and PlayStation 3 as well - perhaps a price cut is around the corner - maybe even by the Holiday Season this year?
