Facebook Bans Free Whopper Burger King Application

Facebook, the very popular social networking site, has disabled the popular Burger King application that would allow you to receive a free Whopper hamburger to anyone who ditched 10 people from their "friends" list. According to Facebook, the application violates its privacy policies and their only action to take was to disable the application. The application would notify people when they were dropped from someone's friend list, and Facebook does not usually condone this practice.

"While Facebook was a great sport, they did ask for changes that would have resulted in a different approach to our application, counter to what we developed. Ultimately, based on philosophical differences, we decided to conclude the campaign and chose to 'sacrifice' the application." said a spokes person at Burger King. They did have a very successful campaign with over 233,000 friends being dropped throughout the campaign to get a free burger. I am sure we will see more and more companies coming up with creative ways to market on social networking sites but perhaps next time if they pay closer attention to privacy policies, their applications won't become banned.
