Latest news on the AT&T MMS activation for the iPhone , according to AT&T's Facebook page, is that it will take place late Friday morning, PST. (Spet 25, 2009) Still a little unclear, but better than nothing. Mutimedia Messaging Service on the iPhone will allow transmission of photos, audio files, locations and contacts using the Messaging app.
Supporting the service are the iPhone 3GS and 3G, owners of the original iPhone are out of luck.
Why did it take AT&T so long to get this feature working? Most other iPhone supporting wireless carriers have been offering MMS ever since the 3.0 update. According to AT&T, "MMS required us to work on our network MMS architecture to carry the record volumes of MMS traffic and ensure an excellent experience from Day One".
(1) Download iTunes 9.0.1 if you don't already have it on your computer.
(2) Connect your iPhone to your computer then open iTunes
(3) When the MMS update is available, you will see a message asking you if you want to install and update to your carrier settings- click Update Settings
(4) iTunes will then inform you that your settings have been updated. Click OK in the message (5) Reboot your iPhone by powering it off and then on again. MMS is now enabled.
Although following the most recent software update, some users have already seen the MMS commands on their iPhones, nobody has been able to use them yet. Industry watchers waiting anxiously to see whether the system will crash from all the extra traffic will soon be able to relax. Still to be rolled out on the AT&T network is support for iPhone tethering.
