Is Laura "Twitter for Dummies" Fitton's OneForty yet another twitter application directory, or a hot new startup? The site, which bills itself as an App Store for Twitter add-on software, launches today, and you can decide for yourself. (That is, if you have an invitation)
The start-up, which received $250,000 in venture funding in June, showcases over 1,300 third party apps and services built on the Twitter API. Each app has a page with its own ratings, comments and screenshots, and users can add a their own profiles with tagging, custom sorting and reviewing. So basically, all the site, now in beta, really adds beyond the other Twitter-related directories is a rating and review system and social networking. Do we really need this?
A good portion of the apps are available free, but the sites business model revolves around taking a percentage of the price of an app. For example, the most popular app on the site currently is the free URL shortener service Bit.ly, which just aout everyone who uses Twitter already knows about anyway. App stores seem to be the next Me Too trend in start-ups. Just find a reasonably popular API, some venture funding and voila!
