Need for Speed: Shift Demo Released

EA's Need for Speed: Shift demo is now available, but only in the PC version. This driving sim game completes EA's move to track racing from street racing that was started with 2007's Need for Speed: Pro.

Grab the demo here and drive the London River track and the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, in one of 4 cars: Lotus Elise, Dodge Viper, BMW M3, or Nissan GT-R. If you're a real demo nut, you can collect enough points to unlock a special 5th car, the Pagani Zonda F. Don't try this on your laptop, Need for Speed means need for racing wheel controller.

Demos for Playstation3 and Xbox360 will come out sometime in October, as well.

A review from Ars Technica throws some cold water on the whole affair, though. Sim racing afficianados might want to read it before bothering with the demo. A snippet:

"The racing itself isn't as real as some games, nor as arcade-y asnothers. It exists near the middle, in a mix that will satisfy peoplenwithout really excelling at anything. The game simply lacks a sense ofnpersonality and identity, even though so much of the experience isntechnically solid. The long load times and by the numbers menus don'tnhelp either."

The review also has a video of the game in action, so check it out.
