Twitter Down By Denial of Service Attack

The most popular microblogging site in the world was brought down to its knees early Thursday morning as the site confirmed that it was being flooded by a Denial of Service attack.

They have not provided any additional information other than that “We are defending against a denial-of-service attack, and will update status again shortly.” which was posted about 30 minutes ago.

They also went on to provide an update that “the site is back up, but we are continuing to defend against and recover from this attack.”

Is still down? Well at Tech Fragments, we still are not able to reach the main web site. Our ping attempts are also not going through, we are essentially being denied of service – exactly what a DoS (Denial of Service) attack does.

Twitter, which hasn’t had a major outage since May, has been improving its reliability in the last several months but if someone wants to bring your web site down – it doesn’t matter if you are Twitter or even Google, it can be done with enough bandwidth saturating the pipes.

I’m sure Twitter is working with upstream providers to block the attacks.

Are you still able to Tweet?

  1. Hopefully the Twitter admin should take the necessary action regarding the said problem so as to avoid any further inconvenience to its users. Twitter down causes people of stunted intelligence and teenagers (of stunted intelligence) everywhere to cry and shake uncontrollably, and Facebook slowpanic and chaos will set in. Dogs and cats will live together, and there will be mass hysteria among people of stunted intelligence!
